Brainspotting
When talk therapy just doesn't do it
Brainspotting (BSP) is a gentle, mindfulness-based approach in which the client-therapist relationship offers a safe alliance as the mind and body work together to dismantle trauma, symptoms, body distress, and outdated beliefs so new, more adaptive perspective can develop and thrive.
When unsettling memories and experiences become frozen in our mind/body and cause disruption and dysregulation of our emotions and behaviors, we may feel “stuck” in negative patterns and experiences. Brainspotting helps to bring our body-system from dysregulation towards regulation, so that we can maintain healthier emotional reactions and improve our overall well-being.
During a BSP session, the therapist uses eye position (Brainspots) to tap into and harness the body’s natural self-scanning and self-healing ability. Throughout the process, you are gently guided to locate and release these challenging symptoms and experiences stored deep within the brain and body. This healing modality can be used with children, adolescents and adults looking to resolve challenges and experiences typically out of reach of the conscious mind.
This technique is enhanced through the use of bilateral stimulation music, which helps to stimulate relaxation during this process. Bilateral sounds can be music, tones or even nature sounds that move from ear to ear alternately in order to activate each hemisphere of the brain and help to calm the sympathetic nervous system (which is the fight or flight response).
Because BSP works within the deeper areas of the brain, it is often used in addition to or in accordance with traditional talk therapy for a variety of emotionally and/or body-based conditions, including:
PTSD, Acute Stress Disorder, and other trauma related conditions
Depression and Grief
Problematic thoughts and beliefs
Addictions (especially cravings)
Behavioral problems, compulsive issues, ADD/ADHD, anger and rage
Phobias, panic, and generalized anxiety
Low self-esteem, self-limiting beliefs, and performance blocks
School, work, and relational stress
